Fine Motor Skills activities, development and control 0 to 8 years

Activities to help develop fine motor skills and control vary according to age and are given here:threading and lacing

Fine motor skills (also known as fine manipuative skills) are small and often intricate movements primarily made by the hands. They begin at the centre of the hand and work outwards to the fingers. Thus a baby begins by “batting” swinging objects on a play-gym then progresses to being able to pick up objects using a thumb and forefinger and by about six can manipulate tools such as scissors accurately.

To develop fine motor skills requires lots of repetitive movement to store the information in the brain so that the next time the child wishes to make that movement the muscles ‘remember’ what movement to make.
