Portage One-to-One Home Sessions
If you are offered one-to-one portage support, a portage worker will visit you and your child usually every week for about an hour. The portage worker will bring a bag of toys to encourage your chid to take part in activities that are specifically designed to help him or her to learn a new skill. Whilst playing she will also observe your child carefully to see if he or she has demonstrated any new skills, or if a different activity may better fit his or her needs.
Parents are welcome to watch and take part in the play. The portage worker will share details of your child’s current skills and future goals so you can also observe and lead your child in appropriate activities.
At the end of each session you may agree on an activity to practice every day with your child and sometimes you will be loaned a toy or book to facilitate this. Often this homework takes only a few minutes but makes a huge difference to your child’s rate of development and the effectiveness of portage.
