Suprised at the Suprise Party

I was recently invited to a surprise birthday party for a girl at work called Lyn. James wasn’t keen because he didn’t know anyone and because he would be missing a football match, but I dragged him along anyway and we arrived soon after it was due to start, about 8:30.

It was quite busy, and we were soon swallowed up in the crowd. James soon cheered up when he found out it was a free bar and was quick to take advantage.

At about 9:00 I said to James that it was a bit odd that I hadn’t seen anyone I knew. I mean, you’d have thought there would have been atleast a couple of people there from work. But then the DJ made an announcement that the buffet was ready, and I found myself at the front of the queue.

“Bit of a cheek, not waiting for Lyn,” I said to the man behind me.

“Lyn?” he said. “Sorry, I don’t know any Lyn. You’d best ask Joyce or Ron.”

It was only then - while I was nibbing on a slice of warm quiche - that I saw the banner above the buffet: “Happy 50th Anniversary Joyce and Ron.”

Ahhh! We’d somehow gone to the wrong party. We didn’t dare admit it because of all the food and drink we’d had. Nor could we leave because the speeches and toasts soon started up. It was awful because every moment we expected to be rumbled. I wondered afterwards what they thought to our present: a lacy thong and pants set.

Have you ever gone to the wrong party?
